Mankato joined eight other Minnesota communities last week in banning smoking.

By a vote of 9,780 (70 percent) to 3,359 (30 percent), voters approved smoke-free bars, restaurants and private clubs in Mankato, according to the American Lung Association of Minnesota.

Cloquet, Duluth, Golden Valley, International Falls, Minneapolis, Moorhead and St. Paul have smoke-free ordinances, some of which include only restaurants.

Beltrami, Hennepin, McLeod, Meeker, Olmsted and Ramsey counties also have smoke-free ordinances.

Across the U.S., voters in Arizona, Nevada and Ohio approved clean indoor air initiatives last week, according to the American Lung Association. So far, 17 states have passed smoke-free legislation.
