A man with Duluth ties died Saturday in a Bloomington, Ill., hospital after walking into a train.

Robert Conner, 27, walked into a Norfolk-Southern freight train that was going less than 15 mph at the time, according to Duane Moss, a media relations specialist with the Bloomington Police Department.

Moss said Conner, who lived in Duluth for a time, walked into the side of the train Friday after its crew blew its whistle to warn him away. Moss said Conner was struck by a staircase hanging off the side of the train.

"He walked into the train himself," Moss said. "It wasn't like he was in front of it and got hit."

Conner had been admitted to a hospital earlier Friday after an apparent suicide attempt at the homeless shelter where he was believed to be staying, Moss said.
