A former Louisiana man was sentenced last week in Sawyer County Circuit Court to 10 years in prison for killing his girlfriend earlier this year.
Kerry L. Stevenson, 52, who pleaded guilty in August to homicide by intoxicated use of a firearm, also was placed on extended supervision for 10 years once released from prison, and ordered to pay $247,092 in restitution and fines.
Stevenson killed Claudia Bunny, 48, of New York. She was shot in the head Jan. 18 and died a week later.
Police received a call at 1:40 a.m. Jan. 18 reporting that Stevenson was at Ray Jay’s restaurant, about 15 miles east of Hayward, screaming and with blood on him.
Restaurant staff said they had seen Stevenson in the restaurant earlier in the evening with Bunny, a 48-year-old woman from Tonawanda, N.Y., a suburb of Buffalo. Because the woman wasn’t with him at the time, staff became concerned and called 911. Sawyer County deputies and emergency medical services responded, and a helicopter ambulance was dispatched.
According to officers, Stevenson told them he had discharged a handgun in or near his truck and that his girlfriend was shot at Treeland’s Resort off County Highway B.
Bunny later was found and transported to an area hospital with a gunshot wound to her head.
