A Side Lake man was rescued Monday after the all-terrain vehicle he was operating went through the ice on Side Lake, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Joseph Rosc, 37, was treading water when rescuers arrived after being summoned about 3 p.m. to the 7700 block of County Highway 5 in French Township north of Hibbing, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Rosc, who had been attempting to ice fish, was pulled from the water by members of the Town of French Volunteer Fire Department. He was taken by ambulance to Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing for evaluation and treatment, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
Authorities warned outdoor enthusiasts to stay off the ice on Northland lakes and rivers because - where ice still exists - conditions are deteriorating rapidly in the wake of recent warm weather.
