A Northwestern Wisconsin man was killed when his vehicle crashed and became submerged in a small pond in Bayfield County sometime late Wednesday or early Thursday.

The Bayfield County Sheriff's Office reported that the body of Dale Middleman, 39, who had lived in the Iron River and Hayward areas, was discovered in a vehicle Thursday when it was pulled from a small pond along Hautala Road in the town of Orienta, about 10 miles northwest of Iron River.

The Sheriff's Office said the one-vehicle accident was reported at about 4 p.m. Thursday. It overturned and became submerged in the pond.

The accident remains under investigation. The Port Wing Fire Department, South Shore Ambulance and Orienta Township Road Department assisted at the scene.
