A 57-year-old Prior Lake, Minn., man was injured in a snowmobile crash Friday night near Brimson.

According to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, David Maxfield was leading a small group of snowmobilers at about 9:15 p.m. on the Brimson Trail, about 3/4 mile southeast of where it crosses County Highway 44, when he went ahead at a high rate of speed and apparently failed to negotiate a corner.

Maxfield's snowmobile went off the right side of the trail, and he was thrown from the machine. Maxfield, who was wearing a helmet, suffered an apparent broken leg, along with shoulder and arm injuries. Alcohol and excessive speed are believed to be factors in the crash, the sheriff's office reported.

Lake County Ambulance, the Lake County Rescue Squad and the Brimson Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the crash.
