Man dead after Itasca County vehicle-train collision

A 65-year-old rural Deer River man died Monday afternoon when the northbound vehicle he was driving collided with a Burlington Northern train on Itasca County Road 11, south of U.S. Highway 2.

Edwin Lloyd Joseph's vehicle rolled over and Joseph was ejected from the vehicle after it struck the westbound train at 2:26 p.m., according to the Itasca County Sheriff's Department. The railroad crossing arms were down at the time of the accident, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Joseph was transported to Deer River Health Care where he died.

Deer River Ambulance and Deer River Fire Department assisted the Itasca County Sheriff's Department.
