A teenager from Green Bay is being held in the St. Louis County Jail after being charged in the shooting of another teenager in Duluth last summer.

A witness told police that Robert Earl McKay III, 18, said he thought it was "cool how the victim's stomach smoked after he shot him.'' McKay is being held on $400,000 bail after appearing in court today on a juvenile delinquency petition charging him with attempted second-degree murder. He was 17 at the time of the alleged offenses.

The delinquency petition also charges McKay with second-degree assault and possession of a firearm by an ineligible person. The shooting took place about 10:30 p.m. July 8 at 1724 New St., in the Lincoln Park/West End neighborhood.

According to the petition:

McKay shot the 17-year-old victim in an argument over a girl. It appeared that the gun had been pressed against the victim's stomach when fired. The wound was not life threatening. The victim said McKay had made earlier threats that he would kill him.

The girl told police that McKay thought she was cheating on his friend by having a relationship with the victim, so McKay "was going to take care of the problem,'' the petition alleges. A witness said McKay was known to carry a semiautomatic pistol in the waistband of his pants.

A witness said McKay said he "likes the feeling when he shoots someone.''

Duluth police worked with agencies in Wisconsin and Illinois to locate McKay. He was arrested on Dec. 28 in Chicago by officers with the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force.
