The company that runs the aquarium at the Mall of America is emerging as the top choice for taking over operations at Duluth's financially troubled Great Lakes Aquarium.

It has become the top choice of Great Lakes Aquarium board members for saving the local attraction, and the board has voted to start contract negotiations with the company.

Steve Ordahl, the executive director of the Minnesota Aquarium, the company that runs "Underwater Adventures," said, "We're just ecstatic about the opportunity to move forward, working out a contract. Once that's signed, (we'll be) getting in and seeing what we can do to turn this puppy around."

The Great Lakes Aquarium board hasn't ruled out a partnership with the company involved with "Ripley's Believe It or Not." They say the Ripley's group is still a strong second choice if talks break down with the Minnesota Aquarium.
