MADELIA, Minn. -- This southern Minnesota town has a new memorial to honor veterans thanks in large part to Gloria Eager.
Wondering why Madelia didn't have a memorial for veterans, Eager approached the Madelia posts of the VFW, American Legion and Ladies American Legion Auxiliary.
Soon after, the three groups got organized, raising $60,000 in just over a year. They sold blocks to be engraved with donors' names. Those blocks will pave sidewalks leading to the monument.
Eager said raising money wasn't difficult.
"I went to a few people, but most people came to us once the story got out," she said. "Madelia is very patriotic."

The granite monument stands along Madelia's main street on land donated by the city. A dedication ceremony is planned for June.
