DULUTH — Harbor City International School notified students and families Friday that mandatory masking will return to its classrooms on Monday.

In an email, Dawn Buck dean of students, operations and enrollment, noted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has boosted the local incidence level of COVID-19 to a "medium level."

She wrote: "We are seeing a steady uptick in local, regional and state levels of COVID spread and infection. We are currently seeing an increase in cases amongst our student body as well. Based upon these parameters, we will be reinstating our HCIS COVID-19 mitigation strategies as of Monday, May 16, 2022."

Students and staff will be required to wear masks except during mealtime. The school also advised that any student or staff member who feels ill should stay home from school, even if the results of a rapid test are negative.

The number of students at each lunch table will be limited to a maximum of four students, and steps will be taken within the classrooms to maintain a physical distance of at least 6 feet between students and staff.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
