  • The Minnesota Supreme Court yesterday overturned the conviction of Roger Caldwell, sentenced to two life terms in prison for the 1977 murders of heiress Elisabeth Congdon and her nurse. Chief Justice Douglas K. Amdahl last night said Caldwell will be retried.
  • The Duluth City Council yesterday agreed to issue $675,000 in industrial revenue bonds to help finance the expansion of Gateway Foods. The expansion includes the addition of a 10,000-square-foot freezer to Gateway's storage and distribution building at 3800 W. Second St.

  • Jens Flaaten, director of the Lyceum Theater orchestra, was killed last night crossing Superior Street at Fifth Avenue West when he was struck by a speeding automobile. Flaaten was one of the foremost musicians in the region.
  • About 5,000 youngsters and 1,000 adults attended the picnic yesterday given for the benefit of local children by the Good Fellowship Club of Duluth. Children from St. James, Bethany, and Duluth children's homes attended and received candy, ice cream and many prizes.
