- Eli J. Miletich, a 23-year veteran of the Duluth Police Department, was appointed the new chief of police yesterday by Mayor John Fedo. Miletich, who replaces Milo S. Tasky, will assume his post May 25 pending confirmation by the City Council.
- The Hjemkomst, the 76 1/2-foot replica of a Viking ship, sailed from the Knife River Marina yesterday, beginning its historic voyage to Norway. The departure, which was viewed by about 150 people, had been delayed for two days by rain and high winds.

- The doors of St. Luke's and St. Mary's hospitals in Duluth will be open to visitors today in observance of National Hospital Day. The purpose of National Hospital Day is to acquaint the public with methods of caring for the sick.
- A 30-piece band was organized last night by the E. Porter Alexander VFW post at its meeting in Duluth's St. Louis County Courthouse. Following the meeting, the band performed a concert in the courthouse rotunda under the direction of Frank Manilla.
