  • Richard Ives, 34, of Columbia, Missouri, will begin work on May 24 as the new administrative assistant to Duluth Mayor John Fedo. Ives, who was chosen from 162 applicants from across the country, replaces Clarence Maddy, who left the job last December.
  • Duluth Fire Marshal Larry Bushey said yesterday static electricity igniting malic and fumaric acid dust could have caused last week's explosion and fire at the Alberta Gas Chemicals plant in Riverside. The company has also hired an expert to conduct an independent investigation.

  • Metropolitan Opera star Geraldine Farrar arrived in Duluth yesterday in her private railroad car. A capacity house is expected for her performance tonight in the Duluth Armory, a concert that promises to be the outstanding musical event of the season.
  • The May Festival will be celebrated in the Duluth State Teachers College gymnasium tomorrow evening. The festival will open with a march in which all students, carrying blossom-laden boughs, will sing "Now Is the Month of Maying" and other English ballads.
