  • Voters in the Duluth school district yesterday rejected a $2 million-a-year excess tax levy and a $2.5 million bond issue to bring schools into compliance with fire codes. That means more cuts will probably be made, including 26 additional teaching positions.
  • The question of whether Superior should add fluoride to its public water supply will be taken up by the City Council's Committee of the Whole on May 18. Superior voters rejected such a proposal in 1957 by a 4-1 margin.

  • The city of Duluth is preparing three camping sites for tourists visiting town this summer. The largest at 85 acres is Brighton Beach on the lake shore, next is the 54-acre site at Chester Park, and then Indian Point in West Duluth with 28 acres.
  • The proposed purchase of the McDougal-Duluth Company's shipbuilding plant in Riverside by the United States Steel Corporation has fallen through, it was reported yesterday. Reports indicated that discussions are permanently ended and that the plant is still for sale.
