- UMD faculty members voted 197-10 yesterday not to strike, saying they will pursue their contract battle with the University of Minnesota through the Legislature. The decision not to strike virtually guarantees an uninterrupted winter quarter at UMD and the Waseca campus.
- The Superior City Council will reconsider a resolution to fluoridate the city's water after voters recommended fluoridation this week. In Tuesday's balloting, the advisory referendum passed in 11 of Superior's 14 voting districts and won 59% of the citywide vote.

- Total receipts of coal at the Duluth-Superior docks this season through Oct. 31 equal about one-third of coal received last year by Oct. 31. So far this season, 3,758,687 tons have been received compared to 9,640,924 tons received by Oct. 31 last year.
- Bids are scheduled to be opened and contracts awarded this week for construction of the proposed St. Louis County Jail on West Second Street in Duluth. Competition for the $400,000 project is expected to be keen.
