Flu death prompts clinics for shots

Two flu shot clinics, one in Cloquet and one in Duluth, are planned next week in light of the news Thursday that a 12-year-old Minnesota child died from flu complications.

A public flu shot clinic for anyone age 6 months or older is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at Carlton County Public Health & Human Services, 30 10th St. N. in Cloquet. Cost is $20 and Medicare is accepted. Call (218) 879-4511 for information.

The Minnesota Visiting Nurse Agency will host a clinic from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 8 at Cub Foods, 615 W. Central Entrance in Duluth for anyone age 5 and older. Most major health insurance plans are accepted. Those without approved insurance will be charged a discounted rate of $14 due to a donation from Cub Pharmacy. No one will be turned away due to inability to pay.

This week, the Centers for Disease Control recommended that all children from age 6 months to 18 years be vaccinated yearly beginning in the 2008-09 flu season.

St. Louis County gets veterans grant

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded the St. Louis County Veterans Service office a $75,164 grant that will be used to add another veterans service officer.

County officials say the money, which also will be used to advertise veterans services to county residents, will help them better serve veterans.

The county is hoping to better promote VetLink, a statewide, toll-free hotline for veterans that helps them find various services. That number is (800) 546-5838.
