A Lincoln Park neighborhood duplex was badly damaged in a fire reported just before 1 a.m. Sunday.

The Duluth Fire Department reports that crews arrived at 320 N. 21st Ave. W. to find significant fire in the attic of the two-story structure that was being evacuated as fire trucks arrived. Firefighters remained on the scene for nearly three hours.

No one was hurt in the blaze that fire officials estimated caused $50,000 in damage to the duplex and contents. Fire crews rescued a dog but a cat remains missing.

There was some confusion during the incident that the fire had spread to a second home, which spurred a second alarm and response from several Duluth fire stations. But fire officials said Sunday that the report of a second home on fire was a mistake.

The Northland Chapter of the Red Cross is helping find temporary housing for the residents of the duplex, fire officials said. The Duluth Fire Marshal's office is investigating the origin and cause of the fire.
