Capitalists, not socialists

Many assume that our legislative bodies can legislate what they want. They don't seem to recognize any limits. And this is dangerous. Take this talk about universal health care, or requiring people to buy health insurance. This is un-American! Our system is capitalistic, not socialistic, so we can't go this route.

The job of the government is to provide some basic services like police and fire departments. Beyond that, it is to "protect" me from you and you from me. It most definitely is not to protect me from myself. It is not the job of government to be my big brother. It isn't to tell me I got to wear a seat belt, or I got to have health insurance. It's not whether these things are a good idea or not, but whether or not we have the freedom to choose.

There are pieces of legislation we need to pass in Minnesota, however. We need to repeal laws that allow a criminal to sue us if they get injured while attacking us. We need to be able to defend ourselves wherever we have a right to be and repeal the law that requires us to retreat.

We need to repeal laws that protect government officials from prosecution when they commit crimes. For example: there were thousands of civil rights violations systematically committed by the New Orleans Police Department (with the help of the Louisiana and Oklahoma National Guards and the U.S. Marshals.) shortly after Hurricane Katrina. There was door-to-door confiscations of peoples' arms. Who would have imagined that this could happen in America? Despite a court order to return their guns, Mayor Nagin is dragging his feet. Why aren't Mayor Nagin and former Police Superintendent P. Edwin Compass III in prison for their crimes? None of us are safe if public officials can get away with stuff like this.

We need to address the above mentioned problems, but instead the DFL controlled legislature is focused on socializing medicine. I don't want my health care rationed. Do you?
