To the Budgeteer:

Hooray for Rep. James L. Oberstar. He signed the Congressional Cancer Promise, sponsored by the American Cancer Society's CAN Action Network Sept. 5. Health care reform is a priority in his book. The conquest of cancer is within our grasp if we adopt new policies and make the investments necessary.

The opportunity to beat this disease demands our focused attention and involvement. We are making progress. To ultimately conquer cancer, our health care systems must ensure that all Americans have access to high quality care. There has to be a plan and choices, and it has to be affordable to all Americans.

Many stakeholders in the cancer fight are doing their part to defeat this disease. It cannot be done without the sustained leadership and strong commitment of our federal government. They promised an end to death and suffering by the year 2015.

We need to have cancer research and programs, as well as early detection, prevention, cancer patient care and survivorship issues met. Our senators and members of Congress can help to achieve this goal.

Thanks to Rep. Oberstar, for supporting this for the American people. We all matter, and he has proven his support.
