Letter to the editor: As the world turns

Life is no longer a bowl of cherries. It has become the pits, with the once greatest and wealthiest country in the world slipping down the ladder in both prestige and prosperity for the whole world to see -- and with no immediate recovery in sight.

Life is no longer a bowl of cherries. It has become the pits, with the once greatest and wealthiest country in the world slipping down the ladder in both prestige and prosperity for the whole world to see -- and with no immediate recovery in sight.

It seems everybody is looking for money. Have you noticed lately how many charitable organizations are asking for donations? I get four or five letters a day.

No doubt they're hurting for money, but who isn't?

Still, with gas prices around the $4 mark, you would think people would be more careful with their money. But the highways are still crowded with SUVs pulling trailers and boats and heading for their happy campgrounds -- to worry about paying the price when they return. Or take a young couple today: What do you think they'd choose if offered a choice between paying $9 a month to preplan their family's funeral needs or $9 a month for some toy they'll probably use once a year? I'm betting on the toy.

But what really bothers me is that our country is squandering millions of dollars in Iraq while life at home gets worse and worse.

Over the past decade, you could see the writing on the wall. Prices continued to rise and salaries were trying unsuccessfully to keep pace.

Then the country is suddenly at war. Now politicians are spending millions to get elected and the country is going into a recession. At the same time, foreclosures on homes are in the thousands with no sign of a rainbow.

Everyone is in turmoil, and more and more people are worried about how they will keep warm and a roof over their heads this winter.

The world keeps turning. Many are shaking their heads and wondering if the world is coming to an end. Who has the answer? Patiently waiting for a better place.
