Ron and Carol Ball's country-style gardens in Duluth's Lester Park neighborhood are a showstopper for those who pass by.

The inviting, old farmstead-inspired gardens are accented with accessories such as old gardening tools and children's toys, statuaries and Ron's rock sculptures.

"It's pretty natural. It's not formal at all," Carol Ball said. "What grows, grows, sort of like a cottage garden."

Judges in this year's Gardens on Display contest, sponsored by the Duluth Garden Flower Society, were so impressed that they gave the Balls top prize in the contest's residential division. The contest emphasizes gardens seen from the street.

"Entering was a whim of my husband's," Carol Ball said. "Because we've been really working hard, he wanted to enter and I humored him. And we won"
