'Leatherheads' leads off Movies in the Park

For the first time, this summer's Movies in the Park series will feature a 3D film. "Journey to the Center of the Earth," the 2008 release based on the novel by Jules Verne, will be shown on July 24.

For the first time, this summer's Movies in the Park series will feature a 3D film. "Journey to the Center of the Earth," the 2008 release based on the novel by Jules Verne, will be shown on July 24.

There will be "a pile of [3D] glasses there for everyone," said Trent Edgerton, a partner in Sound Central LLC of Superior who instigated the free weekly summer event in Leif Erikson Park in 2006.

The season start June 19 with "Leatherheads" (PG13) and will run through a showing of "Madagascar" on Aug. 28.

The films begin just after sunset and are subject to weather conditions.

The schedule includes: June 19 -- "Leatherheads," (2008, PG13); June 26 -- "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" (1989, PG13); July 3 -- "Superman" (1978, PG); July 10 -- "Kung2008, PG); July 17 -- "Men In Black" (1997, PG13); July 24 -- "Journey to the Center of the Earth" Fu Panda" ((3D, 2008, PG); July 31 -- "Iron Man" (2008, PG13); Aug. 7 -- "16 Candles" (1984, PG); Aug. 14 -- "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" (2004, PG); Aug. 24 -- "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" (2003, PG13); Aug. 28 -- "Madagascar" (2005, PG).

  • Chester Creek Concerts kicks off the season with Sweet Grass on June 2 in Chester Bowl, 1800 E. Skyline Parkway. The free concerts are from 7-8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays through Aug. 4. Bring a lawn chair.
