The Duluth Heritage Sports Center has been awarded a $500,000 Challenge Grant by the Kresge Foundation. However, the grant is contingent upon obtaining $1.5 million in donation pledges by April 1.

While the deadline is looming, the Legacy Committee of the Duluth Heritage Sports Center has reason to celebrate. An anonymous donor has just pledged $200,000 to help spur fund-raising efforts, announced Patrick Francisco, chair of the Legacy Committee, which is actively engaged in reaching this monetary goal.

"If ever there was a time to make a financial commitment to the Duluth Heritage Sports Center, that time is now," Francisco said. "If you've considered a gift, do it now - if you act before April 1, your gift will grow by 33 percent. Just think, $300 will become $400, $75,000 will become $100,000 - and ultimately, $1.5 million will become $2 million. A donation to this project will ensure that the values you wish to support will be significant now as well as one hundred years from now. "

Legacy gifts, from naming rights to recognition plaques, are available. Remembrance bricks, which will adorn the Heritage Hall walls are $100 and offer an option for many people to leave a legacy that future generations will see.

The Kresge Foundation, founded in 1924 by Sebastian Kresge, has helped build the nation's nonprofit institutions: libraries, community centers, schools, hospitals, art museums, food banks and countless other facilities. Sebastian Kresge opened his first five- and ten-cent store at age 30. It became a chain store success, was first incorporated as the S.S. Kresge Company, and eventually became Kmart.
