The U.S. Census Bureau has released its estimates for the populations of U.S. cities for 2008, and the Top 10 list in Minnesota looks about the same as it has for the past few years.
Duluth had a gain of three people from 2007 to 2008, going from 84,281 in 2007 to 84,284. In 2000, Duluth's population was 86,918.
"Duluth city is holding its own," said Tom Gillaspy, a state demographer for Minnesota. "That's a huge difference from what we saw in the '80s. Then, there were concerns over whether there would be anybody left after a while."
In the 1970s more than 100,000 people lived in the city of Duluth. Since 1990, the population has remained fairly flat, he said, with several surrounding communities, most notably Hermantown, growing.
"Duluth is in a pretty stable situation," he said. "Not a lot of growth, but not a lot of loss."

The Twin Cities continued to gain in population from 2007 to 2008, as did several suburbs.
The population of the state as a whole increased in 2008 by about 38,000 to 5.22 million.
