Attendance at the Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth is up by 21 percent so far this year over last, with 7,153 visitors through the gates compared to this time last year, zoo officials announced today.

More than 34,000 people have visited the zoo this year despite some wet weather in June, thanks in part to a warm, dry March, April and May.

Zoo officials say recent efforts at improvements by the Zoological Society, community organizations and volunteers -- including repainting the barn, new flooring on the lower level of the main building, blacktopping of footpaths and a new wolf exhibit scheduled to open at the end of July -- should help keep attendance up.

The zoo is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Go to www.lszoo.org .
