A special election to fill a vacant Lake County Commissioner seat will be held March 13.

Commissioner Clair Nelson died unexpectedly on Saturday with two years remaining in his term.

Filing for the District 1 seat, which represents Beaver Bay, Crystal Bay, Fall Lake, part of Silver Bay and an unorganized township, will begin Jan. 29 and end Feb. 2. The tight timeline is because the election must be held within 60 days of the seat coming open, said County Auditor Steve McMahon.

In the event that more than two candidates file for the position, a primary election will be held two weeks before the general election. Candidates can file by contacting the Lake County Auditor's office.
