The first female deputy with the Lake County Sheriff's Office has been easing into her new position.

Dawn Valure-Abel of Duluth started her on-the-road training on April 7, said Lake County Sheriff Carey Johnson.

Women have applied for deputy positions in the county before, Johnson said, though none had been offered a position.

"We are going to take the best possible candidate for a job, and not just hire a female because we've not had a female," Johnson said.

Valure-Abel interviewed for a position in the department in 2007. She received her law enforcement training from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College and has worked in security and with individual inmates for the Minnesota Sex Offenders Program at Moose Lake.

Valure-Abel's new position will be part-time vacation relief for other deputies and part-time bailiff in Lake County Court. The position doesn't require already being a licensed peace officer, as a full-time deputy's position does, Johnson said.

Johnson expects two of the department's 14 deputies retiring in the coming months, and the department has begun interviews to fill those positions, he said.
