While construction is underway of the long-awaited skywalk over Lake Avenue, the closure of the avenue has been delayed until April.

Lake Avenue between First Street and Superior Street had been scheduled to close this week to make way for the project. However, thanks to the assistance of a member downtown business, the contractors will be able to utilize Glenwood Signs and Awards' alley parking area for staging some of their equipment. This also reduces the closure by about six weeks.

It's now expected that the one-block of Lake Avenue will be closed the week of April 6 and remain closed through Sept. 22. All other previous conditions will remain:

  • First Avenue East will serve as the detour route.
  • Local vehicular access will be allowed from Superior Street to the First Alley east of Lake to allow for contract parkers at the Technology Village ramp.
  • Pedestrian traffic will remain accessible on the west side of Lake Avenue.
  • Pedestrian traffic will remain accessible below the alley on the east side of Lake Avenue.
  • Covered scaffolding will be placed over the walkways for pedestrian protection.
  • No public vehicular access will be allowed in the First Alley west of Lake Avenue -- limited access will be provided to property/business owners.

This latest extension of the Skywalk will link the Technology Village to the Lake Superior Place building.
