David Kirby announced on Sunday that he will seek another term on the Duluth School Board.
Kirby, who was first elected to the board's District 2 seat in 2015 and served two terms as School Board chairman, said in a news release that the district has made "important strides in addressing the challenges we face," and that he wants to keep the district moving in a positive direction.
Among successes during his time on the board, Kirby cited passage of an operating levy increase in 2018, expanded participation in language immersion programs, development of equity measures in district decisions and expanded career and technical education programs.
"These improvements have not been without debate, but we have been able to proceed with civility and mutual respect toward our common goal: increased opportunity and achievement for all students," Kirby said in the news release.
Kirby acknowledged that challenges remain, including the district's financial stability, aging technology and school safety. He also said he hopes to engage community members in the process of hiring a new superintendent after Bill Gronseth leaves the post next year.
