Gray oversees a $2 billion budget for an agency that has about 4,600 employees. In various positions with MnDOT, he also has dealt with human resources, facilities management and technology development.

Personal: Married, two children. Grew up in Biwabik and Cloquet, where his dad was a high school band leader. He's a graduate of the University of North Dakota.

Quote: "I'd be in familiar geography up there. That's where I spent my formative years, and I'd really like to go back. I still have links to the people up there," Gray said. "But it's also an opportunity to go into multiple disciplines -- not just public works and finance -- where I could look at solutions for issues in health and human services and corrections and all the other areas the county deals in."
