Johnson is Duluth's poet laureate

Duluth poet Jim Johnson has been selected as the 2014-16 Duluth Poet Laureate in an open selection process by a 12-member advisory committee. For his two-year term, Johnson will receive an honorarium of $3,000 and will organize five public events.

Duluth poet Jim Johnson has been selected as the 2014-16 Duluth Poet Laureate in an open selection process by a 12-member advisory committee. For his two-year term, Johnson will receive an honorarium of $3,000 and will organize five public events.

An inaugural reading and crowning ceremony will take place 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9 in Somers Lounge, The College of Saint Scholastica.

Johnson is the author of seven books of poetry. He has taught in the Duluth public schools and the College of St. Scholastica and was the 2008-2010 Duluth Poet laureate.

Previous poet laureates for Duluth are Bart Sutter (2006-08), Sheila Packa (2010-12) and Deborah Cooper (2012-14).

The Duluth poet laureate project was founded in 2005 and is funded by donations from local organizations. Duluth is the first Minnesota city to select and support a poet laureate in modern times, followed by Red Wing, St. Paul and Winona.
