As if on perfect schedule, the National Weather Service in Duluth says much of the Northland will see a January Thaw Tuesday and Wednesday.
"For sure for areas south and west of Duluth, but Duluth will be right on the cusp of a real thaw'' with temperatures above freezing, said Kevin Donofrio, meteorologist intern at the Weather Service in Duluth. "Either way, it's going to feel awfully warm compared to what we've had.''
Like all true January Thaws, the warmth will not last. Donofrio said temperatures will head back into the deep-freeze next Thursday and stay there for the weekend, with low temperatures back near 20 below zero.
Mark Seeley, University of Minnesota climate expert, said, while we may see short warmups from time to time, he expects colder than normal temperatures to last through March.
