Two men who admitted to a drug-related home invasion and robbery in Grand Rapids have been sentenced to jail time and probation.
Edward Wade Fauth, 19, and Zachary Walter Cary, 28, were each sentenced to 10 years of supervised probation - including a year of local confinement - this week in State District Court in Grand Rapids.
Authorities said Fauth, of Grand Rapids, and Cary, of Cloquet, planned to burglarize a residence on the 400 block of Northwest 17th Avenue in Grand Rapids on Aug. 3. Believing the homeowner was out of town, the men intended to "get some fast money and drugs," according to the charges.
But they instead found two women inside, leading to a 30-minute hostage situation that was thwarted by the brother of one of the victims, authorities said. A firearm was discharged during a struggle, but no injuries were reported.
Police said the incident was broken up when the brother of one of the women arrived at the residence, causing the two suspects to flee after a brief struggle. Cary was arrested in the area; Fauth was later taken into custody in Aitkin County.

Under the terms of plea agreements with the Itasca County Attorney's Office, Judge Korey Wahwassuck stayed 57-month prison sentences for both defendants.
