Melanie Ford will take office in January as St. Louis County attorney.

Ford was officially declared the winner of her race against 28-year incumbent Alan Mitchell today after the St. Louis County Canvassing Board reviewed and certified the results of a recount.

Ford finished with 40,019 votes to Mitchell's 39,931 after a four-day recount of ballots from November's general election.

Ford picked up 141 votes during the recount to erase Mitchell's 53-vote lead.

The day after the election last month, Ford had been listed on the Minnesota Secretary of State's Web site as the unofficial winner, with 100 percent of the votes totaled. However, a 500-vote mistake was found that apparently swung the election to Mitchell. Ford then asked for a recount.

Ford will take over a position that has a current annual salary of $127,477, and oversee a $4.4 million budget. She will lead a staff of 70 people divided into four divisions: criminal, civil, social services and victim/witness services. Offices are in the Duluth, Virginia and Hibbing courthouses and Duluth's Government Services Center.
