A 24-year-old Virginia man was injured in a snowmobile crash in the Crane Lake area Saturday night, authorities said.
The St.Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of the crash near the Trail's End Resort just after 11 p.m. Authorities on the scene determined that the victim lost control of the snowmobile, which left the trail, went down an embankment and struck a tree, throwing the driver off the machine.
Rescue personnel removed the man from the site and he was airlifted to St. Luke's hospital in Duluth with what the Sheriff's Office described as non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation. The Sheriff's Office said that while speed may have contributed to the cause of the crash, alcohol was not a factor.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Rescue Squad, Orr Ambulance, Orr and Buyck fire departments, Buyck First Responders and North Memorial Air Care assisted at the scene.
