The investigation into the head-on collision in Cloquet last week that took the lives of an off-duty police officer and a nurse will take several weeks, a spokesman with the Minnesota State Patrol said Tuesday.
Mark Laine, 49, of Saginaw, and Fay Dahlman, 54, of Alborn, were killed after Laine’s Ford pickup crossed the centerline and collided with the car driven by Dahlman on Minnesota Highway 33 near North Cloquet Road shortly after 11 p.m. last Thursday.
“We are waiting for the medical examiner’s reports that will include the toxicology results,” said Sgt. Neil Dickenson, state patrol spokesman in Duluth.
The toxicology results will take up to 30 days, while an accident reconstruction investigation “can take up to 90 days until complete,” Dickenson said.
Laine was a 27-year veteran of the Cloquet Police Department; Dahlman was a nurse at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet for the past 12 years.
Funeral services for Dahlman were Tuesday in Cloquet. Services for Laine are scheduled for Friday.
