A 27-year-old International Falls man was killed when his snowmobile hit a tree in Voyageurs National park over the weekend.

Corry Wallander was pronounced dead at the scene along an overland trail between Kabetogama and Rainy Lakes, said Jim Hummel chief ranger for the park.

The accident happened about 11 p.m. Saturday night.

Wallander was in the middle of a group of five snowmobilers who had left a resort tavern on Kabetogama and were headed to Black Bay on Rainy Lake. Hummel said excessive speed, darkness and alcohol are suspected of being involved in the crash.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death, Hummel said.
