International Falls man approaches settlement on multiple sex charges

A 22-year-old International Falls man will appear in 9th District Court in Grand Rapids on Monday, when he is scheduled for a settlement conference as he faces multiple charges of felony criminal sexual conduct with a pair of 12-year-old girls.
Dustin Lee Thompson was arrested and booked into Koochiching County Jail in International Falls in March.
Thompson came under investigation when the mother of a 12-year-old girl contacted the Koochiching County Sheriff’s Office with suspicions about a relationship between her daughter and Thompson, said Koochiching County Attorney Jeffrey Naglosky.
“The fact that there are multiple alleged victims, multiple alleged acts and a significant age difference does, in my opinion, elevate the egregiousness of these files,” Naglosky said in an email to the News Tribune, explaining his pursuit of three first-degree charges to go with three second-degree criminal sexual conduct charges. Each of six charges carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and/or a $35,000 fine.
Thompson has remained in jail since his arrest.
According to three criminal complaints associated with the charges, Thompson admitted to authorities that he was carrying on a sexual relationship with the 12-year-old girl, whose mother contacted authorities.
Thompson reported to investigators that he knew what he was doing was “wrong.”
The victim told investigators she was in a relationship with Thompson, the complaint said, and described sexual acts that occurred between she and Thompson. In a separate incident, Thompson described another sexual act he performed with the victim.
Thompson also admitted to sexual contact with another 12-year-old girl, saying he “often babysat the victim.” During that time he would touch her breasts and the victim would touch his genitalia. In both cases, Thompson told police he knew the victims were 12.
Thompson pleaded not guilty to all charges in May, and later underwent a psychosexual evaluation in advance of the settlement conference. The results of the evaluation are confidential, Naglosky said.
