Starting on Sept. 2, families in greater Duluth will be invited to register for Imagination Library, a new program that delivers new, age-appropriate books to children each month in the mail at no cost to the family. To be eligible, children must be under the age of five and the family must reside at an address within one of the following zip codes: 55802, 55803, 55804, 55805, 55806, 55807, 55808, 55810, 55811 and 55812.
Imagination Library promotes early literacy skills and encourages parents and caregivers in their role as a child's first and most important teacher. The program is offered at no cost to Greater Duluth families. All that is asked of enrolled families is that they read with their children.
Started by Dolly Parton in 1996 in her hometown of Sevier County, Tenn., Imagination Library has grown into an international program operating in over 700 communities nationwide, as well as in Canada and the United Kingdom. Greater Duluth is the latest of over 20 communities in Minnesota that are offering Imagination Library to children age birth to five.
Once enrolled, the child will first receive the classic "The Little Engine That Could." Children will continue to receive one hardcover, age-appropriate book free each month until he or she reaches the age of five. United Way of Greater Duluth underwrites the cost of the program, which is $35 per child/per year with donations from foundations, individuals and businesses.
The Miner Family, owners of Super One and a long-time supporter of children's educational opportunities, will host two registration events on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. at the Kenwood and West Duluth stores. Families who live in Duluth, Hermantown and Proctor can sign up for the program at these events.
