  • The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has compiled detailed maps of many Minnesota rivers for canoeists and kayakers. You can find the maps online at www.mndnr.gov . Maps show mile markers, campsites, accesses, portages and more.

  • As with most point-to-point river trips, you'll need some sort of a shuttle. Rosner and his parties drop a vehicle at the take-out, then drive back to the put-in to start their trips.
  • If a portage is available at falls or rapids on the river, take it. Rapids can be dangerous and will vary depending on water level. Portages on the Vermilion River are clearly marked with signs.
