Huskies get past Moondogs

Duluth pitcher Zachary Von Tersch went eight strong innings to lead the Huskies to a 5-2 victory over the Mankato MoonDogs in Northwoods League baseball Tuesday in Mankato, Minn.

Von Tersch, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound right-hander from Georgia Tech, scattered four hits and didn't allow a run despite two Huskies' errors. He struck out seven and walked one in improving to 4-1.

Designated hitter Justin Ellrich led the way offensively for the Huskies, going 3-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs, while right fielder Ryan Jones added another homer.

Nate Hanson and Cody Decker had two hits each for Mankato, which rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning before Huskies reliever Mike Nihsen got a groundout to end the game.

* The Huskies' David Olson of Minnesota Duluth and Adian Kummet of St. Scholastica are inactive but remain with the team.

Olson was made inactive more than a week ago because of Northwoods League roster limits but continues to practice, while Kummet is inactive while he rehabilitates a sore shoulder and waits for a doctor's clearance.

UMD pitcher John Vaudreuil, meanwhile, had his contract expire June 9 and is no longer with the team.
