The Duluth Huskies took an early lead but couldn't hold on in falling 12-6 to the St. Cloud River Bats in Northwoods League baseball on Friday night before 2,302 at Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn.
University of California product Dylan Tonneson was 4-for-5 to lead the offensive attack for St. Cloud (1-1), which was thumped 10-2 by the Huskies on opening night Thursday in Duluth. Teammate Jeff Hulett went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Steve Cochrane was 2-for-5 with three RBIs, including a home run, for the River Bats, who pounded out 16 hits.
Duluth (1-1) also had a big night offensively, giving early indications that the historically pitcher-friendly wood-bat league might have more offense this year after switching to a new ball. The Huskies had 12 hits, with the University of Kansas' John Allman leading the way by going 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
Huskies starter Tim Clubb gave up seven runs in five innings in taking the loss.
St. Cloud pitcher Buddy Baumann earned the win in relief, allowing no runs and striking out three in four innings. Down 5-3, the River Bats scored four runs in the fourth inning and then pulled away with two runs in the seventh and three in the eighth.
