An alleged home invasion near Sandstone early this morning led to the death of one of the intruders, the Pine County Sheriff's Office reported.
Deputies were called to a residence on Fox Road west of Sandstone at 2:38 a.m. on a report of a shooting.
A man described by police as "elderly" told deputies that two men entered his home in a robbery attempt. The man said at least one of the men had a gun. He said he was able to find his own gun and shot and killed one of the intruders.
The other man fled on foot, and a search ensued with the assistance of Minnesota State Patrol helicopter. Deputies said he probably fled to a vehicle nearby and left the area.
The incident remains under investigation with the help of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
