Charges are possible after a 12-year-old girl allegedly called 911 today claiming to have been kidnapped.

The call tied up law enforcement officers and firefighters to a couple hours.

"There were probably 20-plus law enforcement officers from Douglas County, City of Superior, State of Wisconsin, the Civil Air Patrol all involved in chasing down a prank call from a 12-year-old girl," Superior Police Capt. Charles LaGesse said. "It was a major exercise. We see it has a great tabletop."

Dispatchers at the Superior/Douglas County Communications Center received a 911 call at 10:23 a.m. The caller never said a word, so dispatchers, as they are trained to do, began asking a series of yes or no questions.

"It is always possible that someone will call 911 who is not at liberty to speak," Campbell said. "By hitting the keypad on her phone in response to the yes or no questions asked by the dispatcher indicated that she had been abducted and had been wounded and the abductor was still with her. So we scrambled all resources to the area we believed she was."

Law enforcement and firefighters searched the Billings Park and Superior Municipal Forest area for a sometime. At the same time other officials were tracking down the owner of the cellular phone from which the call came. After the owner was found to be safe, police talked to the girl, who admitted to placing the hoax call, police said.
