A 29-year-old Hibbing man was arraigned today in St. Louis County District Court on charges that he murdered his 1-year-old stepson.

Joseph Thomas Ricketts III is charged with second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter. He's being held in the St. Louis County Jail on $250,000 bail.

When police arrived Sunday at Ricketts' residence at 426 E. 32nd St., they found the boy limp and unresponsive in Ricketts' mother's arms. The defendant was outside the residence throwing up in the snow.

According to the criminal complaint:

A Hibbing police sergeant saw an area of bruising on the child's lower chest and abdomen area, approximately an inch by an inch and a half consisting of what appeared to be multiple marks. There was also a quarter-size bruise on the child's left temple area. The officer attempted CPR but was unsuccessful.

Ricketts told a police officer that the child had a bruise on his stomach from a fall earlier in the day. He said his mother had gone to check on the child and found him unresponsive. He attempted to give the child CPR.
