Right on time for its deadline with the city, construction on Duluth's Heritage Sports Center will begin today.
To receive nearly $1.8 million from the city and $3 million from the state of Minnesota, the$15.5 million project in Lincoln Park/West End needed to get under way by today.
The timing is so tight that the Duluth School Board will meet in special session this afternoon to vote on its $1.2 million contribution.
The sports center is expected to revitalize the neighborhood in conjunction with the Clyde Park food and entertainment development next door. This first phase of the sports center's construction should be complete by this winter. Organizers of the nonprofit are raising money to complete the entire sports center.
