The executive director of Harbor City International School is leaving the school after five years in the position, according to a news release prepared by board chairwoman Mary Dontje.

Under John Haire's tenure the test scores of students increased dramatically and the school in 2012 was named a "reward school" for achievement under the state's new ranking system.

Other changes to the charter high school during his time include the addition of advanced placement courses, a new teacher evaluation system and YMCA memberships for all students. The school of roughly 200 students has a waiting list for both ninth and 10th grades.

Haire came to Harbor City from Marshall School, where he was director of the upper school. Haire's replacement has not been announced. Neither Dontje nor Haire returned calls Monday.
