Green Bay boy dies in Bayfield County ATV accident

An 11-year-old boy from Green Bay, Wis., died on Saturday after the all-terrain vehicle he was driving in Bayfield County struck a pickup truck head-on. The boy's father, who was riding on the back of the ATV, was injured.

An 11-year-old boy from Green Bay, Wis., died on Saturday after the all-terrain vehicle he was driving in Bayfield County struck a pickup truck head-on. The boy's father, who was riding on the back of the ATV, was injured.

According to the Bayfield County Sheriff's Office, Benjamin Delain was driving the ATV west-bound on Tars Pond Road in the Town of Drummond at 12:29 p.m. when he cut to the inside of a curve on the road, into the path of a truck driven by Martin Thyssen, 39, of Neenah, Wis.

Benjamin was airlifted to a Duluth hospital, where he died at 6:05 p.m. His father, Peter Delain, was transported to the same hospital with unspecified injuries. It was not known if either had been wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Neither Thyssen nor his passenger, Craig Sherer of Menasha, Wis., was injured. The Bayfield County Sheriff's Office, Barnes Fire and Ambulance, Great Divide Ambulance and a helicopter from St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth all responded to the accident.
