A Grand Rapids man was sentenced Monday to nearly five years in prison on charges stemming from an April drug bust in which authorities seized methamphetamine.
Travis Furman, 38, pleaded guilty in July to second-degree sale of a controlled substance, a felony; and misdemeanor fourth-degree driving while impaired. He was sentenced to 57 months in prison on the felony charge, and 90 days - to be served concurrently - for the misdemeanor.
According to court documents:
Furman was the subject of a drug investigation when he was stopped by a sheriff’s deputy for failing to signal a turn on April 6 in Cohasset. Furman admitted that there was methamphetamine and guns in the vehicle, and a later search of the truck turned up 3.5 ounces of methamphetamine, a handgun and rifle, and drug paraphernalia. Furman told deputies that he and his wife had used methamphetamine at a Deer River motel the night before.
Later on April 6, deputies stopped Furman’s wife, Sulamita Furman, in Deer River as she was driving with three children in the vehicle. A search of the vehicle turned up methamphetamine, pills and other drug paraphernalia. Court documents reported that the three children were placed in foster care at the time of her arrest.
Sulamita Furman, 38, pled guilty in July to fifth-degree possession of a controlled substance, a felony; and gross misdemeanor third-degree DWI. Last month she was sentenced to five years’ probation on the felony charge and five years’ probation with a stayed 12-month jail sentence on the DWI charge. She received a stay of adjudication on the felony charge, which means the conviction will not be entered on her record as long as she complies with court-ordered sanctions as part of her probation.
